The Importance Of Laptop Servicing

We are now starting to see far too many laptops that have their graphics chip overheated to the stage where it is lifting from the motherboard. This is a very costly fix requiring a new motherboard which is often more then a replacement laptop. The downside of this is that we are scrapping even more then we need to in a world that is already throw away instead of fix.

I have a picture here of a recent laptop that was saved just in time, the amount of fluff and dust looks like the inside of a vacuum cleaner.

The picture is showing the laptop with it’s fan and heat sink assembly removed. The air vent is clearly blocked with hair and other dusty material. If this computer had not be serviced when it was, the next step would of surely been overheating of components, especially the graphics chip (GPU) causing the computer to freeze and shutdown and then not run at all.

There have been cases of computers catching alight due to the material inside gathered around vents. So even from a safety point of view, it is wise to have your laptop serviced and I would suggest a minimum of once a year, once every six months if you believe you are in an environment that is dustier then normal.

Cost for this service will vary greatly depending on what has to be stripped down to reach this area of your laptop. Some are easy and only required removing some service covers. Other laptops require a complete strip to get to the same area and it would be wise how easy this is when purchasing a laptop.
